Tiger's Nest (Taktsang) Hike Guide

Everything you need to hike Bhutan's most famous landmark — the cliffside Tiger's Nest Monastery above Paro.

The Tiger's Nest Monastery — Paro Taktsang — is Bhutan's most iconic sight: a sacred temple clinging to a sheer cliff some 900 metres above the Paro Valley. The hike up is a rite of passage for almost every visitor, and it's the perfect acclimatisation day before or after a longer trek.

What the Hike Is Like

The trail climbs steadily through blue-pine forest draped in prayer flags. About halfway up you reach a cafeteria viewpoint — the classic photo spot, with the monastery framed across the gorge. From there the path continues to a saddle, then descends a stone staircase into the gorge and climbs back up to the monastery entrance.

You don't need technical fitness, but you do need to be comfortable with 2–3 hours of uphill walking. Ponies can be hired for the first section up to the cafeteria (they don't go to the monastery itself).

🪜 Acclimatisation tip: Because it tops out above 3,000m, the Tiger's Nest hike is an excellent warm-up before a high-altitude trek like the Jumolhari or Druk Path. Many of our itineraries include it on day one or two.

Practical Tips

  • Start early — set off by 8am to beat the heat and afternoon crowds.
  • Dress modestly — Taktsang is an active monastery. Cover shoulders and knees; long trousers are best.
  • No photography inside the temple buildings, and you'll leave bags and cameras at the security desk.
  • Bring water and layers — mornings are cool, the climb warms you up fast.
  • Good footwear — trainers are fine in dry weather, but the stone steps get slick after rain.

When to Go

The Tiger's Nest can be hiked year-round, but the best months are spring and autumn for clear skies and comfortable temperatures. Winter mornings are crisp and quiet (occasionally snowy near the top), while the summer monsoon brings cloud and slippery steps.
